MONARCH BUTTERFLY
TOUR
THE ULTIMATE MONARCH BUTTERFLY EXPERIENCE
"My late February trip to the Sierra Chincua monarch sanctuary was an incredibly journey, and I'm so glad I went. Jennifer was super helpful and made sure all our logistics worked out. Dr. Jaramillo was a font of info about monarchs and their habits. Best of all, the butterflies showed up and fluttered all around us on the trail so we could observe and learn from them up close in their Michoacán habitat."

TRIP OVERVIEW
The Monarch Migration remains a phenomenal mystery...
Monarch Butterflies are the only known species with an inter-generational migration pattern, involving 3-4 generations of monarchs with a short life-span flying north to Canada, and 1 generation with a longer life-span that flies all the way back to central Mexico. Scientists are still conducting research and exploring theories about how and why this migration happens...
and scientists are struggling for solutions to save it...
If you live along the monarch migration path, there are many ways to assist migrating butterflies, such as growing native milkweed and native nectar plants in your garden. Avoiding products that involve transgenic corn is another way to mitigate harm, as many farmers spray pesticides to kill milkweed in their cornfields. Choosing beef from grass-fed over grain-fed is one way to avoid supporting pesticide use, as is opting for organic vegetables and refraining from using harmful chemicals in your own garden.

Visit the Royal Monarchs of Michoacan with an esteemed scientist...
Dr. Jaramillo is originally from Ecuador and has spent significant time in the three countries that host the monarch butterfly migration. Dr. Jaramillo studied English in the US in his youth, completed his doctorate in Canada, and now lives in Mexico with his Mexican wife and children. His multicultural background and lifelong passion for soil science gives him a unique perspective on monarch butterfly biology and conservation. To understand the migration, we need more detailed information about their relationship with the forests where they overwinter, and if we are to safeguard the health of the butterfly forest, local people must play a major role in its preservation.
Dr. Jaramillo studied agriculture in Ecuador before completing his doctorate in biology at the University of Western Ontario in Canada. His dissertation research focused on reusing human byproducts (organic residues) to create a soil amendment to improve soil conditions for agricultural and forestry applications. In Ontario, Dr. Jeremy McNeil introduced Dr. Jaramillo to the incredible monarch butterfly migration that originates there. Dr. McNeil encouraged Dr. Jaramillo to apply for a postdoctoral fellowship at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Dr. Jaramillo's postdoc led him to his current position in the department of agroecology at the Research Institute for Ecosystems and Sustainability at the National Autonomous University of Mexico in Morelia.
For several reasons, Dr. Jaramillo's postdoctoral project was a turning point in his life. The project focused on improving the soil ecosystem for more efficient reforestation practices in the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve. In the process, Dr. Jaramillo collaborated with an indigenous community that lives inside the Reserve. Through the project, 94% seedling survival rates were achieved, and the forest ecosystem was restored in just four years. Dr. Jaramillo learned that collaborating with local communities and promoting their wellbeing is the only way to effectively conserve the forest ecosystem that monarchs choose as their overwintering grounds. This project earned Dr. Jaramillo the 2014 Pollinator Advocate Award which has encouraged him to continue finding ways to conserve the forests that host monarch butterflies during the winter.
Visiting the monarch butterfly overwintering colonies with Dr. Jaramillo promises to be a wonderful experience not only focused on learning more about these incredible insects but also to see how all of us can help conserve and protect these iconic winged creatures.
We will visit a wonderful pottery studio & stay in Zitacuaro
On our way to Zitacuaro, we will stop at the pottery studio of Javier Servin to browse through his exquisite pottery studio. He offers three lines of pottery, with tiered price-points that make perfect gifts and personal collection pieces...
where we will relax and rest before our big adventure...
Zitacuaro is a bustling city far from the tourist crowds, but our lodgings are on the outskirts of the city. We will begin our lecture at around 5 PM, enjoying further discussion during dinner. The ranch has a heated pool, lovely gift shop with amazing honey from their own bees, among other products, and the rooms are equipped with fireplaces if you'd like to build a fire.
Please be prepared for some steep slopes in the monarch reserve...
The monarch butterflies choose high altitudes for their roosts, so we will be climbing at an altitude of about 3350 meters / 11,000 feet. We will take trucks up the mountain, with an opportunity for some guests to travel local style, in the back of the truck. If you prefer to ride inside the truck, please let us know when you confirm your tour so we are sure to have enough trucks and drivers hired. (Likewise, if you'd like to ride in the back, please let us know). The drive takes about one hour each way and is a bumpy, mountain road.
and all kinds of weather, from warm & sunny to frigid and uncomfortable...
We've been chilled to the bone and sunburned in the reserves and unfortunately, the weather is always unpredictable! We recommend bringing a small daypack for a warm sweater, toque, mittens, umbrella, sunscreen, sunglasses and water bottle. The best part of being prepared is Murphey's Law will leave us to wonderful, warm skies!
