"It is not death that a man should fear,

but he should fear never beginning to live."

- Marcus Aurelius

DID YOU KNOW?  The celebration for Day of the Dead begins with a special observation for the children and innocent souls on the evening of October 31, which lasts into November 1.  On the evening of November 1, loved ones prepare for their next celebration for adult loved-ones, with vigils starting at midnight and lasting through the day on November 2.  We recommend staying for the night on November 2, as our night tour doesn´t end until around 7:30 AM that morning.  Having time to rest and process all you´ve witnessed is a beneficial conclusion.

Trip Overview

DIA DE MUERTOS IN PATZCUARO IS STILL TRADITIONAL

The cusp of autumn and winter marks the time of year when the veil between the living and dead is thinnest. As the harvest season begins to turn, embark on a journey through the ancient mysticism of an age-old culture that continues to celebrate the richness of living.

To be welcomed into intimate spaces where family members are honoring their dead means traditional protocols must be adhered to.  We take our direction from the keepers of this observation, which prohibits visitors from dressing up in Catrina make-up, or in any form of costume.  We ask our guests to be respectful of the locals, and to ask us if you have any questions.

Dia de Muertos in the Lake Patzcuaro region is far more than just a cemetery tour during the night of November 1.  Prior to this enchanting observation, local communities will be preparing for this colossal celebration, cleaning the cemeteries, building marigold altars, and carrying bundles of marigolds and other flowers to the graves of their loved ones.  Arches and gates are decorated with the sweet-scented flower, special foods are prepared, and a joyous energy surrounds the villages as the families honour their dead.

Cemeteries are fascinating here, as you can learn a little about the loved ones who are being celebrated, by the things that are placed on their graves.  Toys, beer, cigarettes, and a plethora of fruits and Pan de Muertos (a special bread that has bones sculpted into the top) are some of the traditional things you will see.

Price & Inclusions

JOIN US FOR A MESMERIZING CULTURAL EXPERIENCE

The price of $9,500 MXN per person is based on 18 Guests in a van that seats 20 Passengers.

Please Note:  Dia de Muertos is the most expensive time to visit our region, and the van rental prices have gone sky-high during this holiday, especially post-pandemic.  These costs are beyond our control, and our price reflects what we are charged.  We work hard to keep our prices as low as possible, but due to our logistics, we have had to increase our price this year.  Please keep in mind that we are bringing you to quieter areas and will be out with you during the night and morning to offer you a special experience, while also avoiding the worst of the night crowds.

The ancient city of Tzintzuntzan means "Place of Hummingbirds," and though small, is quite a special site to visit.  The round tombs, or Yacatas, are unique to the Pùrepecha Capital, and the view of the lake from the site is lovely.  If you would like to visit the archaeological site during our day tour on Nov 1, we highly recommend doing so upon arrival, before lunch so you can spend the afternoon exploring the cemetery and observing the procession ritual as families deliver their special altars.

Guest Responsibilities

BE A TEAM PLAYER

When you embark on a group tour, it is important to acknowledge that your tour leaders are there to assist the group.  If you have specific needs that are in conflict with group travel, please contact us about booking a private tour.

BE ON TIME

Please arrive ten minutes early instead of 5 minutes late.  It is crucial for groups to respect departure times so we can keep our schedule as fluid as possible.  Traffic is a huge obstacle during Dia de Muertos, so walking to our departure points is advised (taxis are busy and often unavailable during the day).

CHANGE SEATS DAILY

Nobody wants to sit in the middle or be relegated to the back seat for the duration of an entire tour.  Out of consideration for fellow travelers, please trade seats daily.  If you´re in the front one day, opt for the back on the second day.  If you have the window seat one day, opt for the middle for the next commute.

ALWAYS BE PREPARED

If you have a medical condition such as diabetes, please alert us so we can go over the meal times with you and ensure that you are prepared with appropriate supplements in the event that a meal is delayed.  If you get irritable due to low blood sugar, please bring along some protein bars or known remedies for your condition.  If you have allergies, please let us know when you reserve your tour so we have plenty of notice for any meals that are being prepared for you.

IN THE EVENT THAT YOU SKIP A DAY TOUR

Sometimes a guest feels under the weather, or just wants to spend a day doing nothing.  If you decide to skip a tour, you are responsible for your own meals, as we may not be returning to the hotel until closer to supper time.  The hotel desk can call you a taxi, or may be able to recommend a restaurant nearby.  Talk to your team leaders before they leave if you´d like them to bring you something back at the end of the group tour.  If you are staying behind because you are seriously ill, we will call a doctor and one of the team leaders will stay behind to run to the pharmacy for you and make sure you have what you need.  In severe cases, you may require hospitalization or even want to cancel your remaining tour for emergency private transport home.  If you are having a medical event, we will do everything we can to assist you.

Please make sure you purchase medical insurance, and send us your emergency contact information.

DO YOU HAVE A COMPLAINT?

Everyone suffers a complaint at some point during a group trip, but how one handles that complaint can affect everyone else.  If you have anger-management issues and are prone to yelling or disruptive outbursts, you will be removed from the group without warning.  We will arrange your transportation home, at your own expense.  It is our responsibility to make sure guests feel safe and that the group dynamic is peaceful and light-hearted.

If you have a serious complaint with one of your team leaders or fellow travelers, please take them aside privately to discuss it.  Berating anyone in front of other guests creates a negative environment for everyone and will not be tolerated.

CONCLUSION

Please remember that flexibility is part of being a seasoned traveler and mature adult.  None of us can predict what bumps may lie ahead, but most annoyances and obstacles are temporary and can either be prevented, or tempered with a little humor and diplomacy.

We are dedicated to ensuring your experience with us is positive

La Catrina is now an iconic feature of Dia de Muertos celebrations, and there will be make-up artists ready to transform you during your stay.  It is not offensive to dress-up for a party, fun photo shoot or private event; however, we prohibit costumes and catrina make-up during our tours, as it is not customary among the Pùrepecha.  We must show respect and reverence to our hosts, and so we follow their example.  If you would like a photo shoot in costume while you are here, please contact us for more information!

Cancellation Policy

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY BEFORE COMMITTING

We have recently made some very drastic changes to our reservation and cancellation policy because as a small business that is privately owned, we cannot afford the financial fall-out when guests cancel their tours.  We would like to explain our new policy and shed some light on why this was necessary.

WE NOW REQUIRE TOURS TO BE PAID IN FULL

We used to ask for a 25% deposit, and then moved to a 50% deposit - but this still didn´t ensure commitment and left us enduring huge financial hardship when guests dropped out.  We are now forced to require full payment for your tour in order to confirm your reservation.

COST SHARING

When we price our tours, costs are divided into two categories.  Your hotel room (if applicable), entrance fees, and meal inclusions are a per-person cost, but the van rental, gas, tolls, driver, guides and all of their expenses are shared between all of the guests.  Once we confirm a price for 10 guests, the price reflects that cost sharing.  If one guest must cancel, we cannot raise the price for the other 9 guests who have already confirmed based on an agreed-to amount, and who have already purchased plane tickets etc.  Going forward, commitment means we cannot offer refunds for cancelled tours.

IF YOU CANCEL YOUR TOUR

We will reimburse you for any entrance fees and activities we do not have to pay for, minus the banking fees we are charged.  We cannot always secure a refund from the hotels, so this will be assessed on an individual basis.  We will not reimburse you for the shared costs, as we must cover them regardless of your presence.

YOU MAY TRANSFER YOUR SEAT TO SOMEONE ELSE

If you have to cancel your tour, you may transfer it to a family member or friend.  We will also try to find someone to take your place.  If we can find someone to take your place, we will refund you for your tour minus the cost of the banking fees, as we do not get those back.

During our night tour, the smells are so wonderful from the abundance of flowers and burning candles.  Tread carefully between the graves, and move slowly to be a smaller presence.  Please do not use your flash, or take close-up photographs of the locals without permission.
