OCTOBER 30, 2024 - PM

La Fiesta de las Catrinas was started 7 years ago in response to the concerning trend of visitors descending upon the traditions of the local P'urepecha people in Catrina-face.  As the elders do not dress in costume for their sacred observations, many of them have expressed dislike of the practice, and we have been attempting to get this message out to the public.  It can be very confusing when the Mexicans dress up for the cemetery tours, as most tourists don't differentiate between Mexicans who come from a colonial background, and indigenous P'urepecha who do not hail from colonialism, despite living under many of these influences. Please be mindful of indigenous communities when you visit them, and be sure to follow their lead.  If your hosts are not in costume, there's a good chance that you shouldn't be either.

For those of you planning to come for our 2025 tour, we regret to inform you that we are no longer hosting this party due to the high costs and low turn-out.  We really need around 100 people to make this party work, and are unable to make this happen for a smaller crowd.  We will keep our ears to the ground in hopes someone else picks this up, and will let you know of any fun parties happening while you are here!
