OCTOBER 28, 2024
This morning we visited a family of paper-makers who are using invasive lilies from the lake (and other materials) to craft beautiful paper, which are then printed with serigraphs. From there, we visited the Temple of Santa Muerte to learn about the controversial and intriguing Patron of Death, whose indigenous root is the Mexica Goddess, Mictlandecuhtli. We visited a wonderful mask carver in the village of Tocuaro named Manuel Horta and were off to lunch with the internationally recognized traditional cocinera Rosalba Morales Bartolo. Last of all, we visited a family of candle makers and enjoyed an interesting distillery tour and mezcal tasting at Hacienda Oponguio. Our days are long, but packed with lots of intrigue, culture, history and colour!
