MONARCH BUTTERFLY
& ART TOUR

MONARCHS OF MICHOACAN

"My late February trip to the Sierra Chincua monarch sanctuary was an incredibly journey, and I'm so glad I went. Jennifer was super helpful and made sure all our logistics worked out. Dr. Jaramillo was a font of info about monarchs and their habits.  Best of all, the butterflies showed up and fluttered all around us on the trail so we could observe and learn from them up close in their Michoacán habitat."

- Cathy (Hope for the Monarchs)

TRIP OVERVIEW

The Monarch Migration remains a phenomenal mystery...

Monarch Butterflies are the only known species with an inter-generational migration pattern, involving 3-4 generations of monarchs with a short life-span flying north to Canada, and 1 generation with a longer life-span that flies all the way back to central Mexico.  Scientists are still conducting research and exploring theories about how and why this migration happens...

and scientists are struggling for solutions to save it...

If you live along the monarch migration path, there are many ways to assist migrating butterflies, such as growing native milkweed and native nectar plants in your garden. Avoiding products that involve transgenic corn is another way to mitigate harm, as many farmers spray pesticides to kill milkweed in their cornfields.  Choosing beef from grass-fed over grain-fed is one way to avoid supporting pesticide use, as is opting for organic vegetables and refraining from using harmful chemicals in your own garden.

Visit the Royal Monarchs of Michoacan with an esteemed scientist...

Dr. Jaramillo is originally from Ecuador and has spent significant time in the three countries that host the monarch butterfly migration. Dr. Jaramillo studied English in the US in his youth, completed his doctorate in Canada, and now lives in Mexico with his Mexican wife and children. His multicultural background and lifelong passion for soil science gives him a unique perspective on monarch butterfly biology and conservation. To understand the migration, we need more detailed information about their relationship with the forests where they overwinter, and if we are to safeguard the health of the butterfly forest, local people must play a major role in its preservation.

Dr. Jaramillo studied agriculture in Ecuador before completing his doctorate in biology at the University of Western Ontario in Canada. His dissertation research focused on reusing human byproducts (organic residues) to create a soil amendment to improve soil conditions for agricultural and forestry applications. In Ontario, Dr. Jeremy McNeil introduced Dr. Jaramillo to the incredible monarch butterfly migration that originates there. Dr. McNeil encouraged Dr. Jaramillo to apply for a postdoctoral fellowship at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Dr. Jaramillo's postdoc led him to his current position in the department of agroecology at the Research Institute for Ecosystems and Sustainability at the National Autonomous University of Mexico in Morelia.

For several reasons, Dr. Jaramillo's postdoctoral project was a turning point in his life. The project focused on improving the soil ecosystem for more efficient reforestation practices in the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve. In the process, Dr. Jaramillo collaborated with an indigenous community that lives inside the Reserve. Through the project, 94% seedling survival rates were achieved, and the forest ecosystem was restored in just four years. Dr. Jaramillo learned that collaborating with local communities and promoting their wellbeing is the only way to effectively conserve the forest ecosystem that monarchs choose as their overwintering grounds. This project earned Dr. Jaramillo  the 2014 Pollinator Advocate Award which has encouraged him to continue finding ways to conserve the forests that host monarch butterflies during the winter.

Visiting the monarch butterfly overwintering colonies with Dr. Jaramillo promises to be a wonderful experience not only focused on learning more about these incredible insects but also to see how all of us can help conserve and protect these iconic winged creatures.

We will stay in Mexico's famous Christmas Town...

From the Morelia airport, we will travel by private sprinter van to the Pueblo Magico of Tlalpujhaua.  We will pack everyone a bag lunch to enjoy in the van during our 90 mins commute.  Doing the commute today means fewer hotel changes, and a chance to explore Mexico's magical Christmas Village.  Please be prepared for cold weather by nightfall, as the altitude is 8500 feet above sea level.

where we will explore the town and enjoy a lecture...

Tlalpujahua is an enchanting village of colonial buildings that are hunched up a steep mountainside, with a very special church in the centre of the town.  Galleries here sell warm wool shawls, capes and accessories, pottery pieces and the famed hand-blown glass Christmas ornaments that won this village the reputation as Mexico's Christmas town.  This evening, we will meet at 5 PM to enjoy a fascinating lecture by Dr. Jaramillo Lopez called "Hope for the Monarchs."

Monarch Butterflies - Sierra Chincua - Michoacan - Mexico (25).JPG

Please be prepared for some steep slopes in the monarch reserve...

The monarch butterflies choose high altitudes for their roosts, moving to lower elevations before their departure.  We never know where they will be until arrival, but both routes involve climbing fairly steep hills in a few places.  There are wooden walking sticks available for rent at the park entrance, or if you have poles, you may want to bring them.  There are horses at Sierra Chincua, which are led by guides.  The cost is usually around $300 pesos return, plus a tip.  Even those who ride will need to hike, as the horses are not permitted within the sanctuary where the colony resides.  If you have COPD or trouble hiking at higher altitudes, please contact us for more information so we can help you determine whether or not this hike is for you...

and all kinds of weather, from warm & sunny to frigid and uncomfortable...

We've been chilled to the bone and sunburned in the reserves and unfortunately, the weather is always unpredictable!  We recommend bringing a small daypack for a warm sweater, toque, mittens, umbrella, sunscreen, sunglasses and water bottle.  The best part of being prepared is Murphey's Law will leave us to wonderful, warm skies!

The authentic town of Patzcuaro is nostalgic, even for first-timers...

Cobblestones streets and picturesque plazas welcome first-comers to our magical paradise of Patzcuaro!  House of Eleven Patios, the Jesuit School, Basilica and Guadalupe Church are all examples of the history that intrigues visitors when they first visit our town.  We have built free-time into your schedule so you can just wander the Centro and soak up the ambience of a town that sits positioned between tradition and modernity.

as is the surrounding lake region that is dotted with art villages...

We are taking you to the Catrina Capital of Capula, where artisans craft whimsical skeleton dolls from clay.  You will also visit the inspiring art estate of Maestro Juan Torres, who was the first to sculpt Catrina from clay.  We will also explore the ancient capital of the P'urepehca Empire at Tzintzuntzan, before wandering down to the ex-convento of Santa Ana to observe the relationship between the pre-hispanic archaeological site & church grounds.  We will visit the pottery studio of Guadalupe Rios before departing.  Our itinerary also includes the embroidery studio of award winning artist Teofila Servin, the copper workshop of the Perez-Pamatz family in Santa Clara del Cobre, and more.  We promise you will feel satisfied with this tour, by the time you depart.

and the original "Pueblo Hospital" in Michoacan State...

Aside from having a traditional lunch at the Sierra Chincua Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary with our friend Yadira, we are also feasting with the locally celebrated Rosario of Santa Fe de la Laguna during your stay.  This P'urepecha village is an important landmark along the Ruta Don Vasco, as it was the second village in all of Mexico to gain "Pueblo Hospital" status in the mid-1500's, and first in Michoacan state.  This community has maintained this tradition since the arrival of Don Vasco Quiroga, who was the first Bishop of Michoacan....
