PROCESSION

OF ALTARS

NOV 1, 2023                    CULTURAL OBSERVATION                    $ 1600 MXN

QUICK INFO

"For life and death are one, even as the

river and the sea are one.· "

- Kahlil Gibran

The preparations for Muertos begin with the seed of the farmers who grow harvests of Marigolds, Cockscomb`s, Baby`s Breath,  Chrysantheum`s and more.  Cleaning rituals in the cemetery conclude with grand processions and gestures of love.

The bustling streets are full of colour, with lively sounds of mariachis that accompany the altars, as the families dance them from their homes, into the cemetery.  A photograph, an arrangement of favourite flowers, a song of reminicense, and the offering of favourite foods are just some of what is here to witness during this enchanting and uplifiting ritual.

Trip Itinerary

Procession of Altars

November 1, 2023

Departure Location:  Morelia

Depart Morelia by 9:30 AM and spend the day exploring the preparations for Dia de Muertos.  Your guide will stop at Cucuchucho, where you can see the locals preparing the cemetery.  You will be in Tzintzuntzan by 11:45 for a Noon reservation at Las Yacatas Restaurant.  Isaac is preparing a special set-menu for everyone.  We ask guests to keep track of your drinks, as they are not included in the tour price.  (Please pay your guide for your drinks in cash, as the restaurant can only provide us with one bill due to it being their busiest day of the year).

Following lunch, enjoy the festive and lively procession of altars, as the families begin to dance the altars of their loved ones to the graveyard.  Though the atmosphere is joyous, this can be an overwhelming experience, so please be prepared for a mix of emotions.

At around 2:30 PM, depart for Capula to enjoy the rest of the afternoon exploring the Catrina Festival, with elaborate Catrinas and other art displays lining the main street.

Return to Morelia around 5 PM

CONSIDERATIONS

Tour Considerations

Photographs

Taking Photographs in cemeteries and during celebrations is permitted, but please do not take close-up photographs of the locals without permission.  Please refrain from using your flash.

La Catrina Costumes

We do not allow our guests to wear face-paint into the cemeteries, as this is not in adherence with traditional indigenous practices.  If you would like to have your face painted after visiting the cemetery in Tzintzuntzan, that is appropriate for the Catrina Festival in Capula, and happenings in the streets.

It's Rainy Season

Please be prepared for rain.  Sturdy footware/boots are recommended as the cemeteries can get extremely slippery when muddy.  We recommend rain gear, umbrella, and warm layers.

Children will Trick or Treat

Some indigenous children are now permitted by their parents to dress up like Catrina during Muertos, but this is still not practiced by teenagers, adults or elders.  As the parents permit their children to trick-or-treat, guests are welcome to bring candies or pesos for the kids.

Bathrooms Cost Money

Bathrooms cost around 5 pesos to use, and though they are available, they are not in all locations.  Please ask your guides for assistance.
