DID YOU KNOW?  Many of the garments that are hand embroidered and loom-woven by Maya artists today echo ancient lintels that depict their ancestors in similar garments?  Representing the cosmos and animism, modern Maya textiles have witnessed a fantastic renaissance in recent years, which is evidence of the continuance of these emblematic designs and a culture that continues to flourish.

Trip Overview

THIS IS AN ECLECTIC EXPERIENCE IN CHIAPAS

From the dominating cliffs of Canyon del Sumidero to esthetic age-old temples peering out from behind the jungle, Chiapas is home to mystical waterfalls, foggy sierras, sister-crops of corn, beans and squash, sacred sheep and the mysticism that remains woven into the fabric of Maya society.  We embark on a short but adventurous journey across this threshold of time, as modern wanderers traversing well-worn and ancient paths inscribed onto the landscape thousands of years ago...

Canyon del Sumidero is home to many animal and bird species, including ospreys, great blue herons, kingfishers, snowy egrets, neotropical cormorants, brown pelicans, vultures, crocodiles, white tail deer and spider monkeys.  We will also pass an ancient Maya temple that is seldom noticed, and visit Our Lady of Guadalupe and the Christmas Tree.  A great place to begin our intrepid adventure in Chiapas.

Lake Pojoj is an ancient cenote in the UNESCO protected Montebello Lakes National Park.  The island in the middle of the lake has beautiful orchids, which should be in peak bloom during our visit.  All guests must wear life jackets, as these waters are very deep in places.  The colour of the water is out of this world....

Your hotels are included, but are priced based on shared accommodations for 2.  If you are travelling alone, we can try to find you a roommate, but if we are unable to do so, you are responsible for the single supplement cost, as this is what the hotel charges us.  The hotel supplement for this tour is $6400 MXN

ENTRANCE FEES

DISCRETIONARY TIPS
If you feel your team leaders have done a good job, tips are customary and appreciated in Mexico.  This also applies to room service at your hotel.  Please ask us if you have any questions.

Cascadas El Chiflon is an ascending staircase that climbs by beautiful waterfalls, eventually enticing guests out to the viewpoint of the Brides Veil.  For avid hikers, there are two more waterfalls beyond the Brides Veil, though the path is steep and difficult.  Wear your bathing suit, as you can swim in different pools along this spring-fed river in paradise (though we warn you that the water is frigid!)

Guest Responsibilities

BE A TEAM PLAYER

When you embark on a group tour, it is important to acknowledge that your tour leaders are there to assist the group.  If you have specific needs that are in conflict with group travel, please contact us about booking a private tour.

BE ON TIME

Please arrive ten minutes early instead of 5 minutes late.  It is crucial for groups to respect departure times so we can keep our schedule as fluid as possible.  Traffic is a huge obstacle during Dia de Muertos, so walking to our departure points is advised (taxis are busy and often unavailable during the day).

CHANGE SEATS DAILY

Nobody wants to sit in the middle or be relegated to the back seat for the duration of an entire tour.  Out of consideration for fellow travelers, please trade seats daily.  If you´re in the front one day, opt for the back on the second day.  If you have the window seat one day, opt for the middle for the next commute.

ALWAYS BE PREPARED

If you have a medical condition such as diabetes, please alert us so we can go over the meal times with you and ensure that you are prepared with appropriate supplements in the event that a meal is delayed.  If you get irritable due to low blood sugar, please bring along some protein bars or known remedies for your condition.  If you have allergies, please let us know when you reserve your tour so we have plenty of notice for any meals that are being prepared for you.

IN THE EVENT THAT YOU SKIP A DAY TOUR

Sometimes a guest feels under the weather, or just wants to spend a day doing nothing.  If you decide to skip a tour, you are responsible for your own meals, as we may not be returning to the hotel until closer to supper time.  The hotel desk can call you a taxi, or may be able to recommend a restaurant nearby.  Talk to your team leaders before they leave if you´d like them to bring you something back at the end of the group tour.  If you are staying behind because you are seriously ill, we will call a doctor and one of the team leaders will stay behind to run to the pharmacy for you and make sure you have what you need.  In severe cases, you may require hospitalization or even want to cancel your remaining tour for emergency private transport home.  If you are having a medical event, we will do everything we can to assist you.

Please make sure you purchase medical insurance, and send us your emergency contact information.

DO YOU HAVE A COMPLAINT?

Everyone suffers a complaint at some point during a group trip, but how one handles that complaint can affect everyone else.  If you have anger-management issues and are prone to yelling or disruptive outbursts, you will be removed from the group without warning.  We will arrange your transportation home, at your own expense.  It is our responsibility to make sure guests feel safe and that the group dynamic is peaceful and light-hearted.

If you have a serious complaint with one of your team leaders or fellow travelers, please take them aside privately to discuss it.  Berating anyone in front of other guests creates a negative environment for everyone and will not be tolerated.

CONCLUSION

Please remember that flexibility is part of being a seasoned traveler and mature adult.  None of us can predict what bumps may lie ahead, but most annoyances and obstacles are temporary and can either be prevented, or tempered with a little humor and diplomacy.

We are dedicated to ensuring your experience with us is positive

We spend most of our lives scanning the greater landscape for wonderful scenery, gazing at waterfalls or ancient temples at archaeological sites and yet shrouded within the beautiful trees is an unreal part of every landscape we´ve ever been, yet rarely notice - and they are sometimes rare and gorgeous birds.  Here we have a Russet-Crowned Motmot, a Keel-Billed Toucan and a Moctezuma Oropendola.  If you love birds, please consider joining us for one of our bird watching tours!

Cancellation Policy

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY BEFORE COMMITTING

We have recently made some very drastic changes to our reservation and cancellation policy because as a small business that is privately owned, we cannot afford the financial fall-out when guests cancel their tours.  We would like to explain our new policy and shed some light on why this was necessary.

WE NOW REQUIRE TOURS TO BE PAID IN FULL

We used to ask for a 25% deposit, and then moved to a 50% deposit - but this still didn´t ensure commitment and left us enduring huge financial hardship when guests dropped out.  We are now forced to require full payment for your tour in order to confirm your reservation.

COST SHARING

When we price our tours, costs are divided into two categories.  Your hotel room (if applicable), entrance fees, and meal inclusions are a per-person cost, but the van rental, gas, tolls, driver, guides and all of their expenses are shared between all of the guests.  Once we confirm a price for 10 guests, the price reflects that cost sharing.  If one guest must cancel, we cannot raise the price for the other 9 guests who have already confirmed based on an agreed-to amount, and who have already purchased plane tickets etc.  Going forward, commitment means we cannot offer refunds for cancelled tours.

IF YOU CANCEL YOUR TOUR

We will reimburse you for any entrance fees and activities we do not have to pay for, minus the banking fees we are charged.  We cannot always secure a refund from the hotels, so this will be assessed on an individual basis.  We will not reimburse you for the shared costs, as we must cover them regardless of your presence.

YOU MAY TRANSFER YOUR SEAT TO SOMEONE ELSE

If you have to cancel your tour, you may transfer it to a family member or friend.  We will also try to find someone to take your place.  If we can find someone to take your place, we will refund you for your tour minus the cost of the banking fees, as we do not get those back.

Shop directly from the weavers and textile artists of Zinacantan, where we will also enjoy a traditional lunch and Pox tasting, which is a local spirit.
